Piccolino

When the Piccolino client purchased a site adjoining his long-running take-away pizza business, his vision was for "something special": a contemporary dine-in venue, open day and night, with a functions area; a slice of the city in the suburbs; a better environment for his family, staff and clientele; a brighter standard for the neighbourhood.

The site's constraints seemed many: it is small, nestled between foundation walls, in a tired and unremarkable shopping strip. The project budget was modest, and there were strict obligations to council building guidelines. Both client and designer were aiming for a dramatic result - but how to create an asset for the area, without overwhelming it?

Piccolino is cathedral-like in its graceful impact - a cohesion of few elements that maximise functionality. Its exterior is its interior; the architecture - steel frame, glazing and luminous timber - is its decor. There's no excess - only light, warmth and room to move, relax, enjoy. Piccolino exceeds its limits, and enhances its environment.
